This wasn't the rigid, fundamentalist Islam of some people's imaginations, but a progressive, sensuous and intellectually curious culture. But when the society collapsed, Spain was fanatically re-Christianised; almost every trace of seven centuries of Islamic rule was ruthlessly removed."

An emergency should be declared to get rid of old, rotten, incompetent politicians of Pakistan to bring back the dream of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The enlightened and just Pakistan where there is law and order, people have security and education, people have clean water, electricity, good food (no junk food, please), awareness of health and hygiene, and respect for all human beings at the top.

To realistically talk about Kashmir, tackle terrorism, eradicate illiteracy. Bring a culture of respect for children, elders, women, and men.

Learn to transform our conflicts into desirable solutions.

Lots of stories to be read, news to follow, emails to attend, and phone calls to make. Food to cook and feed the family. But then a fly comes around buzzing around your head while you are planning to write this serious note on reflections and lessons of life to post on your blog. What comes in your mind? What is this fly doing in my room? How did it reach in my bedroom from the free and breezy world she was in outside this room, this house.

The fly, is it a he or a she? Anyway, it is in my room for a purpose. A purpose to annoy and irritate me so I can get trained and use to her/his buzzing around me and not react and kill it. Her/his constant repetitive buzzing just like the news on t.v. channels. The constant repetitive useless stories told like the buzzing of a fly. Annoying and irritating and wasting their and viewers time without giving solutions or bringing balanced and objective news/opinions and not giving chance to the 'other side' as well. The side that people do not realize many times is not given. Opinions are given under the garb of news. Mind set and perceptions are being set and manipulated to get what 'someone out there' wants people to think and act in a certain way. People are slaves and robots and do not want to think for themselves. People like to be told, it is easy. To think is an effort nowadays. That is why there is more mindlessness going on in many areas of our lives and then those who are thinking are not all angels.

So the fly is still around. I think it is time to get rid of it.

May we have the strength to differentiate between the real and the assumed, the right and wrong, to be honest and wise in all our actions.

May we resolve our differences with peace and harmony.

May we have the strength to dispel the mis-interpretations, mis-conceptions, and wrong impressions of and for each other.

May we be those who walk on the Earth in humility and address each other with Peace.

May we have hearts and minds to be happy for others and not let jealousy take an inch in any part of our beings.

May we be content, thankful, and patient in our lives.

May we be extremely cautious and wary from those who stealthily whisper in our ears and leave us with doubts in our minds and weaken our firm and truthful resolve.

May we use our intellect fully and not remain confused.

May we have the strength to think rightly and find the light of knowledge and discover the path that leads to success.

May we not consider ourselves superior and belittle others. We are all procreated from men and women and no one is superior to each other. No tribe or family is superior to other. The objective of our Creator to create tribes was to be able to recognize one another. The person may either be man or woman, or from any family or tribe. The criteria for superiority is not race or status, but personal character and behaviour. This is being told by the Almighty, Who knows well what superiority means and how it is earned.

It has been my honor to serve as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since March 2008. As a first-time parliamentarian, I have honored the oath I took to perform my functions “always in the interest of the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity, well being and prosperity of Pakistan.”
However, ever since my party leadership’s decision to join the federal government, it has become difficult for me to be true to my oath. I believe that PML Q leaders by leaving their role as an opposition party have not lived up to the expectations of millions of voters who reposed their trust in them in the Feb 2008 elections. I tried to prevail upon the party leadership to change their decision, but in vain. Now the only honorable course open to me is to resign from PML membership and also as member of the National Assembly on the occasion of vote for Budget.
Abstaining from voting on the budget, would practically mean approving it, and with it, tacitly endorsing all government policies and future plans. Since I believe this coalition government is working against the interests of the people of Pakistan, my support for the budget would compromise all my struggle for the people. I cannot vote against my conscience. I have thus voted against the budget. Just like Marui in Latif Sain’s Shah Jo Risalo, this Marui too cannot compromise the struggle for her marooara (people.)
As I had predicted, PML Q has not been able to correct the disastrous course of this government. And they will not be able to do so in the future as well. Simply because this government has a built-in flaw: its sole objective is to protect its vested interests rather than people’s interests. It is my firm belief that the only thing that would continue in the coming months is crass, corrupt politicking to steal the next election. The real concerns of the people would continue to be neglected.
Therefore, I believe that:
-To be associated with a government, which has not followed parliament’s joint resolution mandating action against NATO forces in case of drones, has bartered Pakistan’s sovereignty, has not protected Pakistan’s sensitive locations, has not kept our territory protected from foreign forces, would be a travesty.
-To be associated with a government which has allowed human rights of thousands to be grossly violated by not giving them justice, salaries, minimum wages, regularizations, jobs (Haleema, NPIW, Lady Health Workers, APP, NCHD, NEF, Lower Education Staff etc), would be subversive.
-To be associated with a government, which has taken away food and shelter from the poor, fuel from the vehicles, electricity and gas from industry and homes, which has forced people to commit suicides due to its corruption, faulty economic policies, which has forgiven the loan defaulters, which has not been austere, which has not taxed the rich appropriately including inequitable taxation for agriculture and industry, would be criminal.
-To be associated with a government, which has been completely negligent in its primary responsibilities during natural and national disasters like Attabad lake, the recent floods, the Abottabad crisis, the complete break down of law and order in all of Pakistan, would be perfidious.
-To be associated with a government, which has abysmally failed to protect its own constitutional office holders, security forces, religious sects, minorities, media and most importantly therefore innocent people from kidnappings, targeted killing and terrorist attacks, which is fighting a directionless war and is compromising with criminals, would be atrocity.
-To be associated with a government which has allowed Pakistan’s image to be trashed internationally, has practically abandoned the valiant people of occupied Kashmir, has let national sovereignty to be chipped away, has not managed its relations with friendly countries like China at its optimal, has not handled the Indian threat with firmness and dignity, has done nothing to counter growing campaign against Pakistan’s nuclear assets, would be treacherous.
-To be associated with a government which has used provincialism as a political tool, which has has not resolved border commission dispute on Diamir dam, has not fulfilled its promises in Agaze Huqooqe Balochistan or KPK financial revival package or FATA Reforms, has not fulfilled its rehabilitation commitments for earthquake 2005 victims, has not fulfilled provincial quota obligations, has discriminated between rural-urban and head-tail for water, has not held anyone accountable in mishaps like the Airblue crash, has not resolved inter-provincial water disputes in line with 1991 Water Accord, has not passed the National Language bill accepting the rights of provinces, would be disloyal.
-To be associated with a government whose corruption, lack of meritocracy, incompetence has brought national economy down on its knees, which has mortgaged the coming generations’ future by mindless borrowing, shattered public sector corporations, retarded industrial production, hammered the small farmer and has pushed half the population in the depths of wretched poverty, would be a perversion.
-To be associated with a government, which has willfully clashed with the judiciary, has dragged its feet on the Accountability Bill and the bill to prosecute terrorists, and has rendered parliament irrelevant, forcing thousands like myself to get justice from Judiciary versus parliament would be treasonous.
-To be associated with a government that is run by thugs and commission-mafia, who have lined up their pockets with development funds, deprived people of their fundamental rights such as clean water, schools, health centers, roads, electricity, gas, would be shameful.
It is time that the people of Pakistan are freed from this government. It is time that sincere, tax-paying Pakistanis unite for Pakistan’s sake. It is time they reject old politics and espouse new politics, where the definition of politics is serving ones people rather than ruling over them. For the above reasons I hereby tender my resignation for the sake of the people of AJK, Balochistan, GB, KPK, Punjab, Sindh – my Pakistan.
I intend to honor my oath by educating my people on the dangers of supporting a corrupt, inefficient and self serving government that is happily allowing our homeland to descend into chaos. I want to impress upon my people through my Karavan-e-Haq, that they don’t have to accept a government that robs them daily. That they have a right to clean governance, and that their destiny is in their own hands.
I intend at all times to honor my flag, continuing my humble struggle for Haq and providing Pakistan with the leadership that can make it a just, moderate, and developed country.

He is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward . He has knowledge of all things.

( Surat al-Hadid, 57:3)

Look around your room. Everything you see has been designed and made by someone: the door, the CD-player, a picture hanging on the wall, the window, and so on. Now look through the window at the trees, the Sun, the sky, flying birds, and other people. If it is nighttime, you can watch the stars and the Moon. Knowing that everything in your room has been made, is it not clear that everything around you also has been designed?

The truth of this assertion is apparent. If you cannot claim that a picture hanging on the wall was made by coincidence, then you also cannot claim that the Sun, stars, and the Moon are the result of coincidence. Everything you see on Earth and in the sky has a designer, producer, and creator. Our Lord, Who created everything with great artistry, introduces Himself to us through His creation.

When you look through the window you cannot see Him. However, Allah's existence, power, and artistry is clearly seen in His creation. This is the meaning thatal-Batin conveys to us. His existence and control is clear in every corner of the universe, yet no one can see Him unless He wills otherwise:

Eyesight cannot perceive Him, but He perceives eyesight. He is the All-Penetrating, the All-Aware. ( Surat al-An'am, 6:103)

The mindset of our so called MUSLIMS have to be rethought... we all have to pay attention to the versions of Islam we are following... Some people agree with Saudi style practices... now is that ISLAM? some are making a mixture and practicing in PAKISTAN and else where... do people read the Quran every day use it as a book of reference? Or did you learn to recite and learned proper TUJWEED and that is it? How many can perceive a religious person without a 'beard' or 'hijab'.... How many follow the examples of Messenger Muhammad (SAW) when in his times,there was a lady who was against him and she use to throw garbage on him, what did our Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) do to her? No religion teaches barbarism or to forget the value of the life given to us by our Creator. In the U.S., we can say all what we want, but they stopped the fanatic who was trying to burn the QUran. Lawlessness is one of the signs of an UNCIVILIZED society, doesn't matter which religion the society practices. Also, what is the point of any religion or way of life?

What have I learned? Short but true for me…

How did the year 2010 end the Year 2011 begin? There is a lot of good that happened and will happen in this world and a lot of bad that happened and will happen in this world. It is nothing new; it is just the same what has been happening since the day human beings stepped foot on this beautiful earth. I would like to mention few of the experiences and observations that I went through my life. You might agree or disagree; I have no issue with that. Also, I am capable of being positive and that is the way one can move on happily in one’s life by forgiving, letting-go, and to have a resilient attitude. I am just sharing some experiences and observations that usually people will not want to say or show and that is fine with me too. I would also like to suggest that after reading this note, one doesn’t have to construe or start imagining that my life is miserable. But if you want to think this way then that is fine with me but please keep the thoughts with you. Writing this note is a prologue to my future writing experiences and stories of my life, my travel to various countries, my friendships, and my acquaintances. If you can learn something and like something, you are welcome. If you do not like something and do not agree with something, ignore it and let it go, believe me it will be helpful and healthier than brewing it inside your heart and mind. I am thankful to my Creator for a wonderful life I have. I am blessed with a wonderful family and friends. I am extremely thankful to have awareness to realize that I should be thankful for all the blessings I have which can take the rest of my life to count.

I found that people can be quite unforgiving does not matter how many years go by. I found that strength of honesty, truth, and justice can be threatening to some human beings. That everyone thinks in their head that they are right or sure of their perspectives. That those who for some reason do not really like or love you whether it be family or friends will always find reasons to prove you wrong this way or that way. And those who like or love you will make everything possible to prove your worth. If you are polite, humble, speak the truth, are always true to your word and commitments, you are considered weak, naïve, and gullible. Lying or tricking for your benefits and getting through life with what you want are generally considered acceptable and savvy. That money is power. That people judge others on the basis of financial status only. That money can literally buy people, buy respect, buy loyalty, buy traitor ship, and much more. Money has a lot of power and for some that is all what matters. There is a huge struggle between the right and the wrong, even today. That human face is extremely capable of deception. I also found that money and power can really blind you. Blind love is really blind and can be fatal and make you weak. However, there is no strength like the strength of truth, justice, and honor. There is no struggle like having a balance in your life of truth, justice, and fairness. The struggle has continued in past years and the struggle will continue in future. The hope is to reach a point where we do not have to struggle for the balance in our lives and precious gems of truth, justice, fairness, living with dignity and honor become our first nature. Have a wonderful year ahead for everyone. Forgiving and letting go is a very useful virtue to have with us. Smile and stay hopeful.

The wave of floods triggered by monsoon rains in north-west Pakistan is now said to have killed at least 800 people. Many are still missing.
A local government official described the flooding as the worst in the country’s history.

A million people have been affected in the inundated areas. The city of Peshawar has been cut off.
A state of emergency was declared after more rain fell in one 36-hour period than had been recorded in decades.
“There are very bad conditions, people sitting on roofs of their houses, women on roofs, they have no water, there’s no food for people,” said one man.

Many have struggled to reach higher ground after rivers burst their banks. Roads and bridges have been washed away.

Aid workers have been trying to provide shelter, food and water, and medical treatment.

“The biggest problem for the children and the elderly is their stomachs, all of them have diarrhoea,” said Mehmood Jaa, a camp doctor.

“Most people complain of itching and their skin is covered in spots. They’re in pain, suffering from fever and coughs.”

More helicopters have been deployed this weekend to lift people out of the worst affected areas.

"Don't let someone become a PRIORITY in your life when you're just an OPTION in their life. Relationships work BEST when they are balanced".

Another interesting quote applies to most of us.
First I was dying to finish high school & start college,then I was dying to finish college & start working,then I was dying to marry & have children,then I was dying for my children to grow old enough so that I can go back to work, then I was dying to retire & now when I am actually dying,I realised that...... I forgot to live :-(

It is unfortunate that there is no condemnation from the West on today's barbaric action from Israel. And the West expects Muslims to condemn terrorist's acts and terrorism without knowing that the Muslims condemn all kind of terrorism.

The Lahore terrorism is also another horrible act of human beings on human beings. When will people learn stop the violence?

BBC needs to improve their journalistic skills. Especially, in interviewing people and trying to twist the reality.

The Expander

Is there anyone who will make Allah a generous loan so that He can multiply it for him many times over? Allah both restricts and expands . And you will be returned to Him. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:245)

Allah grants spiritual and material abundance to those who believe in Him and who obey Him wholeheartedly. He removes the difficulties they face. Upon encountering any hardship, trouble, or sickness, believers take refuge only in Allah. As a reward for this, Allah eases their tasks while making things difficult for unbelievers.

The Qur'an provides many examples about this issue. For instance, Prophet Musa (as) and the Children of Israel were forced to leave Egypt due to Pharaoh's violence. However, Pharaoh followed them. During this flight, the Children of Israel, who were caught between Pharaoh's army and the sea, thought that they were finished. Yet, Allah answered Prophet Musa's (as) call, divided the waters, and made a dry path so they could escape. Allah also destroyed Pharaoh and his army, and made the Children of Israel their inheritors.

This was also a manifestation of the following situation: "Those who make pilgrimage in the Way of Allah will find many places of refuge on Earth and ample sustenance. If anyone leaves his home, making pilgrimage to Allah and His Messenger, and death catches up with him, Allah will reward him. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful." ( Surat an-Nisa', 4:100) No doubt, Allah's promise has always been true-and will remain so-for His faithful servants. One verse reads:

Your Lord expands the provision of anyone He wills and restricts it. He is aware of and sees His servants. ( Surat al-Isra', 17:30)

Most of them represent the principles and aphorisms propounded by him from time to time. But they have a bearing on the current events, and as such, I hope, they will have a stimulating effect in encouraging the study of our current history. As a guide, the value of this book is immeasurable as I am sure, that the leaders of today and tomorrow will find its contects to be of absorbing interest and of great use in clarifying their ideas as to the lines on which their efforts for the consolidation, progress and development of Pakistan should be directed.

An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, *Common Sense*, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;

- Why the early bird gets the worm;

- Life isn't always fair;

- and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

MUSLIMS, CHRISTIANS AND JEWS BELIEVE IN THE SAME ALLAH

The three revealed faiths sent down as a blessing by our Lord through true prophets and true scriptures, Islam and the uncorrupted, genuine forms of Christianity and Judaism, share many common beliefs. Although the Torah and the Injil were gradually corrupted over the course of time, the essence and moral values of the true faith are still to a large extent preserved in these books sent down from the Presence of Allah. These uncorrupted parts can clearly be seen when looked at using the Qur’an and the hadith as a guide. These three revealed faiths all believe in the absolute existence of Allah, that He is eternal, that He created the universe from nothing and that He rules all matter with His almighty power. Muslims, Christians and Jews also oppose the same intellectual errors. They share the same intellectual struggle against atheism, irreligion, racism, fascism and moral degeneration. Have they not looked at the birds above them, with wings outspread and folded back? Nothing holds them up but the All-Merciful. He is the All-Seeing . ( Surat al-Mulk, 67:19)

Our human faculty of sight is limited. With the naked eye, we can see for only a few kilometers. But to achieve this, we need clear weather and to be standing on a high place. Yet no matter how convenient the conditions may be, we can see only a hazy image.

In some situations, and especially when people are alone, they assume that nobody sees them. Assuming that they will not have to account for their deeds, they feel encouraged to do whatever they wish. Furthermore, they think they will never suffer any consequence for their wrongdoing. But this is a great delusion, for Allah sees even the smallest act. While our eyesight is limited, Allah sees the room in which a person remains, the rooms surrounding that room, the entire house, the city and country that harbor that house, the continent in which that country is located, the entire Earth, all planets, space, and all other dimensions beyond it. In the Qur'an, Allah informs us that He is aware of everything:

You do not engage in any matter, recite any of the Qur'an, or do any action without Our witnessing you while you are occupied with it. Not even the smallest speck eludes your Lord, either on Earth or in Heaven. Nor is there anything smaller than that, or larger, which is not in a Clear Book. (Surah Yunus, 10:61)

Perform prayer and pay alms. Any good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find with Allah. Certainly Allah sees what you do. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:110)

They have different ranks with Allah. Allah sees what they do. (Surah Al 'Imran, 3:163)

Those who adulterate Our Signs are not concealed from Us. Who is better-someone who will be thrown into the Fire or someone who will arrive in safety on the Day of Rising? Do what you like. He sees whatever you do. (Surah Fussilat, 41:40)

The universe is based upon equilibrium and harmony. As scientific developments reveal more of its mysteries, we learn more about this equilibrium and harmony. It is apparent that each system in the universe has been designed by a superior intelligence that created everything in an amazing way. For billions of years, this great harmony and order has existed among an infinite number of living and non-living beings.

When we examine life on Earth, we come across amazing details. Whether we recognize it or not, we are surrounded with countless signs of creation. For instance, the ratio of different gases in the atmosphere are ideal for the survival of all living beings. Human beings and animals inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. Although this process continues without interruption, the amount of oxygen never decreases and the amount of carbon dioxide never increases. Moreover, this amazing equilibrium is never disturbed, because contrary to human beings and animals, plants inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Thus, the oxygen consumed by people and animals is replaced by plants, a process that preserves this equilibrium.

This example is only one of the countless signs of creation on Earth. Both the micro- and macro-universes abound with similar examples. The universe, and thus life on Earth, exists only because our Lord creates things in conformity with one another. One verse reads:

And when Musa said to his people: "My people, You wronged yourselves by adopting the [golden] calf, so turn toward your Maker and kill yourselves. That is the best thing for you in your Maker's sight." And He turned toward you. He is the Ever-Returning, the Most Merciful. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:54)

AL-BAQI- THE EVERLASTING

Everyone on it will pass away; but the Face of your Lord will remain , Master of Majesty and Generosity. ( Surat ar-Rahman, 55:26-27)

All of creation has an end. People are born, live for a certain period of time, and then die. This is also true of plants and animals. For instance, a tree may live for hundreds of years and then fulfill its destiny by dying at its appointed time. Similarly, non-living things also will meet their end, for time wears them all out. In addition, what remains of ancient nations is only their ruins. Allah calls our attention to this fact: "How many wrongdoing cities We destroyed, and now all their roofs and walls are fallen in; how many abandoned wells and stuccoed palaces!" ( Surat al-Hajj, 22:45)

The universe also has an end. All of the meteors, stars, and suns hurtling through space will one day exhaust their energy and disappear. Or, for another reason, Allah will destroy this universe and keep His promise regarding the Day of Judgment. He can do this, for He is the Creator and sole Owner of infinity, as the Qur'an reveals:

Anything you have been given is only the enjoyment of this world's life and finery. What is with Allah is better and longer lasting. So, will you not use your intellect? ( Surat al-Qasas, 28:60)

1-3. The fate of the capitalistic system and business mentality will ultimately be doom. The importunity of such a mentality is to take the full measure when receiving; but at the time of giving, to give less than their due. They like to exploit the capabilities of others to the fullest extent, but do not want to give them full recompense. They pay the minimum to workers and keep the maximum for themselves. Not only do they do so in terms of material things, but even when assessing the worth of other people, they try to restrict their growth. They should never be allowed to grow to their full potential. They should be groomed only to the extent that suits the investor. They should not be given unnecessary freedom.

4. Are they under the impression that this system will last forever and that no one will be able to change it? This however is their self-deception. The time will certainly come when the people who they have chained to their economic captivity, will rise and free themselves, pushing the oppressors out of their way.

Zakah – Its Concept and Purpose in Islam – II

In part I of this article, we had examined the prevailing opinions of both religious and secular Muslims, as well as the prevailing system of Zakat in some so-called Muslim countries. We had concluded that the concept and practice of Zakat has been reduced to a lifeless ritual by means of which the rich believe they can gain entry into Heaven in the Hereafter. On the other hand, our Prophet (pbuh) acted to establish the Deen of Allah in Medina by implementing the system of Salaah and Zakat as spelled out in the Quran. In this part we will look closely at this system of Zakat.

If Zakat is one of the pillars of the Deen, it stands to reason that this pillar must stand on a firm foundation. That firm foundation is comprised of each Muslim’s unshakable conviction, 100% commitment, utter sincerity, and complete dedication to the belief that the Allah-owned resources on the planet must be made available to all creatures and human beings for their sustenance, nourishment, and growth.

The Arabic word Zakat, with its root Z -K-W means growth and development. A tree is nourished and grows in the presence of Allah-owned resources such as the soil, the rain, the sun, and the air (56:63-72; 80:24-31). Any interference in the flow of any of these resources will retard the growth and development of the tree. Similarly, any individual, group, government, or system which disrupts the natural flow of Allah-owned resources on the planet to all human beings creates an imbalance in society: the rich/poor, the master/slave, the owner/worker.

In the West, this awareness is dawning in respect to plants, animal and insect species which are becoming extinct due to this imbalance in nature caused by the actions of human beings.

However, the global economic imbalance continues to grow unchecked because human beings have refused, in their greed, to believe in the basic economic principle of Zakat: unrestricted flow of resources to all human beings (41:10, 50:11, 55:10, 56:73, 79:33, and 80:32).

The capitalist New World Order of the West actively seeks to control the natural resources of weaker nations under the guise of “global economic security.” Using the United Nations as a tool, the weak are intimidated into submission either through economic sanctions or military force. Allama Iqbal beautifully captured this mentality of the powerful when he said: “Hai wo sultan ghair ki kheti pe ho jiski nazar.” (The master is one who always has an eye on others’ lands.)

Muslims, too, have abandoned the Quranic Zakat, which is Allah’s assured challenge to this naked exploitation of the weak by the strong. Unlike other religions, Islam is a Deen, a system of life, a constitutionally-run, collective life that encompasses the social, economic, political, judicial, and military aspects of a community. The leaders of this community are not priests, or scholars, or the rich, or the strong: they are the most upright who commit to upholding the laws of Allah in the land, “Amr bil ma’aroof” (enjoining what is right) and “Nahya ‘anil munkar” (forbidding what is wrong). They make sure the Quran, the Constitution of Allah, is enacted i.e. put into action.

What then, is the position of the Quran on the Economic World Order that should prevail, in other words, Zakat? The Quran emphasizes the importance of economics in human life. While describing the life of Heaven, the Quran says there will be no hunger and no misery there.
"There is therein (enough provision) for thee not to go hungry nor to go naked.” [Yusuf Ali (20:118)]

Too, the Quran teaches us to work for the good of this life, as well as the hereafter (2:201, 7:156), in contrast to the mindset of those who consider economic prosperity in this life to be an end in itself. According to the Quran, such people live at the animal level:

“Verily Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which rivers flow; while those who reject Allah will enjoy (this world) and eat as cattle eat; and the Fire will be their abode.” [Yusuf Ali (47:12)]

Taqwaa (righteous works) includes the use of economic prosperity to achieve a higher and nobler goal (10:63-64, 16:30). Economic prosperity is a means, not an end; it is a source for life, not the end of life; it is a prerequisite for growth and development in life, not the final goal of life. Since economic prosperity is so essential to human growth and development, Allah has addressed the issue of Zakat in great depth in the Quran.

To begin with, Allah says He is Rahman and Rahim:

“There is no moving creature on earth but its sustenance dependeth on Allah: He knoweth the time and place of its definite abode and its temporary deposit: All is in a clear Record.” [Yusuf Ali (11:6)]

“How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (both) them and you: for He hears and knows (all things).” [Yusuf Ali (29:60). Also see verses (6:152) and (17:31)]

Allah, of course, does not personally feed anyone:

And when they are told, "Spend ye of (the bounties) with which God has provided you," the Unbelievers say to those who believe: "Shall we then feed those whom, if God had so willed, He would have fed, (Himself)?- Ye are in nothing but manifest error." [Yusuf Ali (36:47)]

Allah fulfills this promise by creating the resources for the nourishment and growth of all moving creatures. No one, therefore, has the right to own or control the Allah-given natural resources or to restrict their flow to humanity at large (107:7, 17:20). Otherwise, this is tantamount to belying the Deen of Allah (107:1-6). Any association or partnership with Allah in this respect is Shirk, an unforgivable sin in the sight of Allah. Allah says:

“Join not anything as equal with Him; be good to your parents; Kill not your children on a plea of Want—We provide sustenance for you and for them.” [Yusuf Ali 6:151]

Secondly, Allah is clearly the real owner of the resources He has created. The following verses in the Quran leave no doubt about this:
· The earth and all its resources belong to Allah. It is such an obvious fact that no one can deny it (6:12, 10:31, 29:61 &63, 31:25, 34:24, 39:10 &38, 43:9).
· Allah is the inheritor of the earth (19:40).
· The earth has been created for the benefit of all (55:10).
· It has been created to provide nourishment for all (56:73).
· To Him belongs all that is in heavens and the earth, “La hu ma fissamawati fil ardh” (2:116, 2:255, 4:171, 5:40, 14:2, 16:52, 20:6, 22:64).

“Lillahi ma fissamawati fil ardh” (2:284, 3:109, 3:129, 4:131,132, 5:40, 10:55, 10:67, 14:2, 16:52, 20:6, 21:19, 34:1, 42:4, 42:53, 53:21).

“Lillahi miraathus samaawaatti wal ardh” (3:180).

As Owner, then, Allah has given us these resources as a trust which we are required to disburse according to His Will (the system of Zakat), which is, to make available to all living creatures according to their needs, without any hindrance or control, the sustenance and provisions of life.

It was the Prophet’s (pbuh) unshakable conviction, his utter commitment, and total obedience to this system of Zakat that led to the establishment of the basic infrastructure of a universal, welfare-based economic system in Medina, and which reached its pinnacle during Khalifa ‘Umar’s (R) time when, it is said, hardly anyone was in need of charity. The Prophet (pbuh) lived his life true to this principle: he was not an owner of anything, no land, no possessions; he was merely an enforcer of the Will of Allah – he established the system of Zakat.

Shirk – Associating Other Owners Besides Allah to the Ownership of the Earth

Since Allah owns the Earth and its resources, then no one else can be an owner. A simple example illustrates this well:

I wish to buy a piece of land. The seller and I sign the papers, and legally, I become the new owner. But if we carry this process back far enough, a point will come where this mutual deal will come to an end. Someone must have acquired that land illegally at first without any mutual agreement. Now, in legal jargon, any illegally acquired property, no matter how many times it is bought and sold thereafter, remains illegal. So, how can I say that “I” am the “legal” owner of that land? In my own defense I may claim that I acquired the land “legally,” or that it is not my responsibility to worry about someone else’s very first illegal acquisition of that land, or that I bought it from halal earned income, so I “own” it. But it does not change the reality — I am involved in a deal which was Shirk to begin with. And, as long as I believe in “my ownership,” I am involved in Shirk.

Brothers and sisters! It is not difficult to understand this kind of Shirk if our hearts and minds are open and sincere. According to the Quran, Muslim believers are required to enter into a contract with Allah in which they must sell their life and wealth to Him in exchange for Jannah:
“Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise)” [Yusuf Ali 9:111]
But, if we cling to the attitude that we own our life and wealth (in violation of the above ayah) then how can we practice and establish Zakat? First, this Shirk (having two owners, Allah and us) has to be slowly and gradually eliminated before the tree of Zakat can take firm root in a land rooted in Tauheed (with Allah only being the owner of everything including our lives) and not in Shirk (in which others are also owners along with Allah). That is where Sadaqaa or charity comes in.

What is Sadaqaa?
Our Islamic scholars interpret both Zakat and Sadaqaa as charity. And whatever instruction Allah has given in the Quran in the following verse for Sadaqaat they attribute it to Zakat.

Alms [Sadaqaat] are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of God; and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by God, and God is full of knowledge and wisdom. [Yusuf Ali (9:60)]

But, first of all, why would Allah use two different terms if they mean exactly the same thing? It does not make sense. Secondly, the Arabic language also does not support it. While the root meaning of Zakat comes from Z-K-W , meaning growth and development, the root meaning of Sadaqaa comes from the root S-D-Q , meaning truth and power. Therefore, all the words that are derived from this root will have these two meanings (truth and power) embedded in them. Siddeeq is one who proves his trust and belief by his actions. As-Sadaqatu is anything that is given in the way of Allah voluntarily to prove one’s promise and belief in Him as opposed to Zakat, which is compulsory [Tajul ‘Uroos]. Therefore, Sadaqqa has a different purpose in Islam than Zakat and both cannot be equated with each other. How can income tax (a compulsory thing) be equated with charity (a voluntary thing)?

The Function of Sadaqaat
Initially, Allah asks us for Sadaqaa (charity – voluntary giving), which is used to gradually change a wrong, unbalanced economic system (based on capitalist politics of greed) to a balanced one that guarantees equal economic opportunities and protection to all. The rich are asked to give their surplus wealth back to the nascent Islamic state for the benefit of the poor and suffering—the ones who really worked hard for creating that wealth in the first place. The instruction about Sadaqaat in verse (9:60) above would gradually change an unjust economic system to one that would ultimately be based on the economics of Zakat.
Thus charity is an emergency measure whereas Zakat is a permanent feature of Islam. Also, by making charity a short-term solution, the Quran recognizes that long-term or indefinite dependence of individuals and nations upon others invariably leads to degradation of the human self, to loss of human dignity, and to lack of human freedom and thought – all of which constitute human growth and development.
Conclusion
Sisters and brothers! Zakat is not an economic ritual to purify a Muslim’s wealth and to earn salvation in the hereafter. Quranic Zakat, as implemented by our Prophet (pbuh) and the rightly-guided Khalifas, forms the basis of an economic system which ensures economic security, with dignity, to everyone under its jurisdiction, right here, in this world. In addition, the tree of Zakat cannot grow and develop in a land rooted in Shirk. This must always be kept in mind.

How Zakat leads to the growth and development of the entire human race will be discussed in the next article.

The Resurrector

How can you reject Allah, when you were dead and then He gave you life, then He will make you die and then give you life again , and then you will be returned to Him? ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:28)

All people who have or will ever live are mortal. Everyone dies and is buried. Despite this obvious fact, however, most people avoid thinking about death and their subsequent resurrection. The Qur'an describes their situation, as follows:

They will ask: "Are we to be restored to how we were when we have become perished, worm-eaten bones?" ( Surat an-Nazi'at, 79:10-11)

The Qur'an provides the most explicit answer to this popular delusion by proclaiming:

He makes likenesses of Us and forgets his own creation, asking: "Who will give life to bones when they are decayed?" Say: "He Who made them in the first place will bring them back to life. He has total knowledge of each created thing." (Surah Ya Sin, 36:78-79)

As these verses indicate, Allah created humanity and granted different qualities to everyone. Indeed, down to his or her fingerprints, each person has unique characteristics. As our Creator, He can re-create each person in the very same manner as many times as He wills. Allah displays this coming resurrection each autumn, when nature begins to "die" and then actually experience a type of "death" during winter. Yet when spring comes, we see dry branches blossoming, nature being revived and becoming green all over. Furthermore, this "resurrection" has been happening without any interruption since time began. For Allah, resurrecting each person is as easy as this. The parallel features of these two resurrections are stated in several verses, as follows:

He brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living, and brings Earth to life after it was dead. In the same way, you too will be brought forth. ( Surat ar-Rum, 30:19)

So look at the effect of Allah's mercy, how He brings the dead Earth back to life. Truly, He is the One Who brings the dead to life. He has power over all things. ( Surat ar-Rum, 30:50)

Another meaning of the beautiful name Al-Ba'ith is "sending out Prophets." Allah sent Messengers to warn their people and bring good news in order to call them to the right path. He revealed books to some of his Messengers so that they could bring people out of the darkness of ignorance and into the light of true knowledge. No doubt, this is a great blessing of Allah to His servants. In the Qur'an, Allah relates that:

Mankind was a single community. Then Allah sent out Prophets bringing good news and giving warning, and with them He sent down the Book with truth to decide between people regarding their differences. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:213)

Allah showed great kindness to the believers when He sent a Messenger to them from among themselves to recite His Signs to them and to purify and teach them the Book and Wisdom, even though before that they were clearly misguided. (Surah Al 'Imran, 3:164)

GENESIS & IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN

The history of mankind makes tragic reading. Down through the ages, we come across a series of sequences of the rise, growth, decline and fall, not only of nations but even of their civilisations and cultures. No doubt, man has all along shown a remarkable constructive genius, having attained many an awe-inspiring successes, despite occasional set-backs and natural catastrophes, but his constructive genius was always undermined by some inherent weakness underlying his ideas, or his way of life which ultimately brought about a disastrous end to his efforts. Nevertheless, there have been some notable exceptions in the series of sequences when the idea of universal welfare of mankind took practical shape, but the main characteristic in all those civilisations, always remained one of frustration. Man struggled hard to find some satisfactory solution to his problems, but failed. Human intellect, limited as it is helped him little, because it is not aware of any source of knowledge other than itself. There was only one guide left for mankind in this difficult quest; and that confidently proclaimed competency to lead them to their goal:"
The God that has created all the objects in the universe has also undertaken to make them aware of their goal and guide them towards it, (20:50)
The guidance, which comes directly from God, is known as "Revelation". It has all along been revealed to mankind through the agency of various Anbiya But, unfortunately, due to the ravages of time and human tampering with it, the text of the Scriptures, the message delivered by the pre-Islamic Anbiya, could not be preserved long in their original form. Eventually, about fourteen centuries ago, the complete and final version of that Guidance was revealed to mankind through Mohammed (P.B.U.H.), the last of the series of Anbiya. This version of the Divine Guidance is embodied exactly in its original form in the Quran.
2. The responsibility of the Nabi, to whom Divine Guidance was revealed, was not only to communicate his revelation to others, but also to establish an socio-economic order in the light of that Guidance. Our Rasul---Mohammed (P.B.U.H.) --established this order which fully recognized dignity of all human beings (17:70). The pursuit of individual interest was replaced by the ideal of the good of the humanity at large. Oppression and exploitation were abolished and justice and equity prevailed. The dependence of man and the subjugation of one over another were brought to an end. Every individual was assured the proper satisfaction of these needs. He, thereby, led a full life of satisfaction, peace and harmony. He did not owe obedience to any person or power, except the Divine Laws enshrined in the Quran. Briefly, that order completely put an end to the rule of man over man. In any form, and with it the evil of capitalism. This order was called Deen in the Quranic terminology.
3. This social order prevailed during the lifetime of Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) and for some time thereafter, when the forces of exploitation began to raise their first success with the establishment of Mulukiyyat-kingship--sustained by capitalism. To ensure their survival and consolidation, these forces availed themselves of the co-operation of men who appeared in the robes of piety and spoke in the name of God. They posed as the interpreters of God’s Will and thus distorted principles and tenets of Deen which no longer remained a living force in the society and were reduced to a set of soul-less beliefs, lifeless dogmas and realities of life. They framed rules and laws to suit the purpose of monarchy, and sought to keep the common man entangled in the labyrinth of these dogmas and rituals, and the exploiters, religious as well as temporal, were left free to maintain their stranglehold upon the defrauded masses/ This was the metamorphosis of Deen into Mazhab, which word, by the way, does not occur anywhere in the Quran. The Book of Allah, however, remained intact, since Allah has taken Himself, the responsibility of its preservation Himself, although it was never allowed to play any part in the practical life of the Muslims.
4. This state of affairs prevailed throughout the Muslim countries for centuries together where Mazhab was accepted as true Islam. We should, however, consider ourselves fortunate in as much as a voice was raised in our time and from our own country, to distinguish between Deen and Mazhab, and the Ummah was called upon to revive true Islam in the light of the Quran. This was the voice of Iqbal, the great thinker, and still greater scholar of the Quran. This, he said, was possible only if we had a piece of land in which a State was established purely on the lines indicated by the Quran, thereby wiping out completely the rule of man, in any form, be it capitalism or priestcraft. This scheme of his he pronounced in his Presidential Address of All-India Muslim League Session at Allahabad, in 1930. Such a State, he said:
Would mean security and peace for India resulting from an internal balance of power, and for Islam an opportunity to rid itself of the stamp that Arabian Imperialism was forced to give it, to mobilise its law, its education, its culture, and to bring them into closer contact with its own original spirit and with the spirit of modern times.

AL-'AZEEZ - THE ALMIGHTY

The Almighty
Do not imagine that Allah will break His promise to His Messengers. Allah is the Almighty , the Lord of Retribution. (Surah Ibrahim, 14:47)
This name of Allah expresses that He will always triumph and that He can never be refuted, for only He has true power. Allah created the universe's order, all of its laws (both known and unknown), and all beings on Earth. In the face of Allah's infinite power, which clearly manifests itself in the universe, the feebleness of every created being and thing is obvious. All that is created can only exist, survive, and act if He commands so.
No doubt, this feeling of feebleness also holds true for humanity. No matter how well-off, strong, and powerful people may be, each person is weak and helpless in Allah's sight. No possessions, money, or status can protect them from Allah's punishment; only those who surrender to Him, live by His orders, and strive to earn His consent will be protected. In the Qur'an, Allah promises to grant superiority to His loyal servants.
Allah has written: "I will be victorious, I and My Messengers." Allah is Most Strong, Almighty. (Surah al-Mujadala, 58:21)
. and He has sent down the Furqan. Those who reject Allah's Signs will have a terrible punishment. Allah is Almighty, Lord of Retribution. (Surah 'Al Imran, 3:4)
Allah bears witness that there is no deity but Him, as do the angels and the people of knowledge, upholding justice. There is no deity but Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise. (Surah Al 'Imran, 3:18)
Do not be grieved by what they say. All might belongs to Allah. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Surah Yunus, 10:65)
A pertinent hadith of Prophet Muhammad (saas) relates:
A bedouin once said to the Prophet (saas): "Teach me something to say." The Prophet (saas) replied: "Say: 'There is no god but Allah, the One with no partner. Allah is the Greatest by far; much praise be to Him. The Lord of the Worlds be praised; and there is no power and no strength save in Allah the Almighty, the All-Wise.'" (Sahih Muslim)

Zakah – Its Concept and Purpose in Islam – 1

The economics of zakah and its relevance to modern times is a hotly debated issue among both religious and liberal Muslims. This series of articles will attempt to explain the concept of zakah in the light of only the Quran and the faithful implementation of this concept by our Prophet (pbuh). We will see how a similarly implemented system can solve the current economic problems of not just Muslims, but of the whole world.
We will first examine the prevailing opinions of both religious and secular Muslims, as well as the prevailing institution of zakah in some so-called Muslim countries.
Religious Vs Secular Arguments
Imams and religious leaders emphasize the importance of zakah explaining that the economic problems of Muslims would be solved if we start practicing, in earnest, this much-neglected pillar of Islam. Most religious Muslims, on the other hand, conceive of zakah as charity. They are content with implementing the religious Shari’ah and Fiqh that was developed by religious leaders and jurists (Imams and Fuqahaa) more than a thousand years ago. Even with the reality of global economics, many religious Muslims not only do not understand the complexities and underlying dynamics of the Western economic system, but also do not deem it worthwhile or necessary to study and know it indepth. Although many religious Muslims express displeasure with the Western economic system, blaming it for sucking Muslims’ wealth, they themselves do not shy away from trying to profit from it. Many Muslims are heavily involved with stocks, bonds, and other investment instruments offered by this purely capitalistic system, but they continue to expound the benefits of the Shari’ah. They hold conferences on Islamic economics in such bastions of capitalism as Harvard University, but fail to see the contradiction. They twist the Shari’ah to suit the interests of the rich and the powerful in the name of adaptation to “our times.” They give fatwas about halal (allowed), and haram (forbidden), identifying halal stocks on Wall Street as opposed to haram interest in banks. One wonders if they really fail to understand that the very interest, which they consider haram, is, in fact, the foundation of capitalism on which stands Wall Street. How can the branch of a tree be halal if its root is haram?
Secular Muslims, on the other hand, dismiss the idea that zakah has the potential to solve the complex economic problems of today’s Muslims. They say the world has changed since the Prophet’s time and that the economic system he implemented is no longer applicable to modern times. They are impressed with the outer glitter of the West and dazzled by its economic achievement. In their opinion, Muslims will be better off economically and politically if they follow the Western system. They claim, in imitation of the West, that religion is a private affair between man and God; therefore, it should not meddle with politics or economics. This classical argument is put forth by secular Muslims who forget that Islam, as a way of life, must include every aspect of a Muslim’s life: social, political, and economic. Secular Muslims cut the root of the Islamic tree but hold onto a few branches by calling themselves Muslims. They do not have the courage to leave Islam, but they want Islam to leave them – alone. Again, one wonders how they think a tree can be alive if its roots are cut off. Allah says in the Quran that we have to enter in Islam completely (2:85, 2:208). Therefore, there is no such thing as a partial Muslim or partial Islam. Secular Muslims also forget, or ignore, or fail to realize that it is, indeed, the Western system and its economic policies that have polarized the world into Haves and Have-nots; East and West; Developed and Under-developed; First and Third worlds.
In regard to the prevailing system in many so-called Muslim countries, strangely enough, zakah is based on the way it was set up by the Imams under the direction of the Abbasid kings. Since the Quran does not recognize the existence of kings and priests, they had no authority to develop a Shari’ah for the Muslim masses. Yet, today, we do have a Shari’ah in our hands, which we accept unquestioningly. How was this done? In the first place, the Shari’ah of the Abbasid kings and priests was sanctified by attributing it to the Prophet (pbuh). Secondly, any critics of the time were silenced by the proverbial carrot and stick. This method was just as effective then, as it is now. Those who refused to bow to any form of pressure would be labeled as infidels and put to death; their writings would be destroyed. In this way, the kings and the priests established their version of the Shari’ah as the truth, to the extent that today, many religious Muslims find the following statements very strange: only the Quran is sufficient for us; we can implement true Islam based solely on the Quran; the prophet (pbuh) left only the written Quran to the Ummah; the Prophet told Muslims to follow only the Quran; the Prophet gradually abolished slavery; the companions of the Prophet (pbuh) were true Mumins who did not deviate from the Quran and the true faith. Well-meaning religious Muslims will quickly quote Shari’ah to refute the above statements, which are perfectly true and found in the Quran. How ironic that the Quran has been made to appear strange and the man-made Shari’ah made to look like the truth.
The Real Zakah – The First Universal Welfare System
Contrary to the beliefs of both religious and secular Muslims, the Prophet’s achievements were based not on ephemeral but on the permanent values of the Quran. He brought about the greatest revolution – even an economic and political miracle – in human history (see Michael Hart, THE 100, pages 3-10). In a very short time after the prophet migrated to Medina and implemented the system of salaah and zakah, the economic condition of the people changed. (For a detailed discussion about the system of salaah, see a two part article in MONITOR, pages 6-10, September/October 1998, and pages 7-12, December1998/January 1999)
The Prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said: If a single person were to sleep hungry in a town, then God’s protection is lifted from such a town. [Masnad Imam Ahmad] This hadith emphasizes that no one (Muslim or non-Muslim) under this system should go hungry. Thus this zakah system created the first universal welfare system in human history. It also gradually transformed the existing slave-based economy to a universal welfare-based economy. By the end of the Prophet’s period, the entire Arabian Peninsula enjoyed economic as well as political security. This system reached its pinnacle during Khalifa ‘Umar’s time (again, see Michael Hart, THE 100, pages 261-265), a time when, history tells us, hardly anyone was in need of charity.
What has occurred then in the intervening years that the Muslim masses are suffering economic deprivation even though they live in areas with plenty of natural resources?
What Happened?
Muslims and non-Muslims alike ask the question: If the system implemented by our Prophet (pbuh) and Sahabaa (r) was so good, why did it not continue? The answer is simple: we changed or abandoned the system implemented by the Prophet. Instead of deciding matters with open consultation, as the Quran requires, the Ummayad and Abbasid dynastic rulers created a dictatorship under the guise of “Shari‘iah” and “Ijma‘a”. This was a ploy to fool the people. The rulers first acquired illegal political authority, and then delegated religious authority to Imams appointed by themselves. Thus they hijacked the train of Islam from the track of our Prophet (pbuh) and his Sahabba (r) and put it on a new track called “Shari‘ah.” Since then, a minority of the rich and powerful has been riding this train and entertaining their friends while exploiting the vast majority of Muslims along the way. Consequently, common Muslims have continued to live in poverty and to suffer intergenerational economic misery. Islam’s system of zakah has had nothing to do with this sad state of affairs.
But The Sermons Go On …
While the power hungry Muslim rulers, politicians, and autocrats exploit and plunder the God-given resources, the sermons about zakah go on in mosques and convention centers around the world. And while the effective control of Muslim land and its vast resources have slowly passed into enemy hands, the sermons exhorting ordinary, working-class Muslims to give zakah in the name of Islam and the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) continue. While thousands of children die from malnutrition and lack of medicine, religious Muslims spend millions of dollars on food and decorations to celebrate the departures and arrivals of Hajis (pilgrims) in hundreds of cities and towns around the world. Many religious and rich Muslims firmly believe that performing multiple Haj and Umra is the highway to heaven. While many of the Imams and religious leaders join in and participate in the celebrations of the rich by praising their religiosity, all the while they exhort the poor to be patient and accept their predetermined fate. One wonders why the borrowed Zorastrian concept of predetermination, which favors the rich and powerful and permanently disables the poor and the weak, was inserted and is now faithfully maintained in the books of Shari’ah.
Status Quo Vs Change
The big question now looms before us: when and how should we confront these defenders of the status quo? When will we implement the economic system of zakah so effectively demonstrated by our Prophet (pbuh)? To answer these questions, it is essential that we differentiate between our current concept of zakah and the real meaning and significance of zakah.
Our Present Approach to Zakah
Today, we are taught that zakah is one of the pillars of Islam. zakah is generally translated as charity or poor-due and it is required to be distributed according to the details given in the Shari’ah. However, the descendents of the Prophet (pbuh), generally known as “Syeds” in the Indian subcontinent, are forbidden to take zakah according to this Shari‘ah. No matter how poor, they are considered superior by birth compared to other Muslims due to their supposed relationship with the Prophet (pbuh). Obviously, this is against our Prophet’s Sunnah since he proclaimed justice, fairness, and equality for all, regardless of family or blood relationship.
The dispensation of zakah is regulated by different rates (called shar‘h) for different items (called nisaab) whose details are given in books of hadith and Fiqh. Zakah on money is 2.5% of the savings over a period of one year according to the Shari’ah. There are many conditions attached to the giving and receiving of zakah. There is no uniformity even among the Sunnis in the restrictions, rates, and even the items of zakah.
In addition, there are different books of Fiqh and Shari’ah for different Muslim sects or schools of thought! Although Islamic scholars know about these differences in zakah among the Muslim sects, they rarely bring them out into the open, since it is in the interest of these scholars to keep the people ignorant.
The differences in zakah among the four Sunni Imams are not as major as among the Sunni and Shi’ia Imams. For example, in Fiqh Jaffariah, there is no zakah on paper currency. So, for the followers of this Fiqh there is no Zakah on bank accounts. When General Zia-ul-Haq, the Pakistani military ruler instituted compulsory zakah in Pakistan, the Shi’ia ‘Ulema revolted against it and refused to abide by the government’s zakah ordinance. Ultimately, the government excluded Shi’ias from the yearly bank account deductions. This led many Sunnis to declare themselves Shi’ias on their bank forms to avoid paying zakah on their bank accounts.
Religious Tricks to Avoid Zakah
Some Sunni jurists have been very creative in teaching people how to avoid paying zakah. The Kitab-ul-‘Heil or Book of Tricks teaches Muslims how to avoid zakah while technically fulfilling the requirements of the Sharia’h. In other words, how they can have their wine but not lose jannah: Rind ke rind rahe haath se Jannat na gayee.
Many religious Muslims, who are very particular about prayers, are quick to take advantage of the tricks specified in these books. Like the Jews fishing on the Sabbath, this is tantamount to playing games with the verses of Allah. The Quran reminds us: “In the long run evil in the extreme will be the end of those who do evil; for that they rejected the Signs of Allah, and held them up to ridicule” (30:10). “And when he learns something of Our Signs, he takes them in jest: For such there will be a humiliating penalty” (45:9). [Yusuf ‘Ali]
Conclusion
Dear sisters and brothers! We must re-turn to the true spirit of the Quran; we must have the courage to follow the Islam of our Prophet (pbuh), which requires real sacrifice and a drastic change in our lifestyles. We must go back to the Quran as the primary source, and not to the rulings of Islamic scholars from the time of the Ummayad and Abbasid rulers.
In Part 2 of this article we will look at the real meaning and significance of zakah - the Arabic word zakah with its root z-k-w, which means growth and development, not charity or poor-due. Keeping this meaning in full view, zakah is supposed to ultimately lead to growth and development of all human beings; it is supposed to remove the need for charity or poor-due in the long term. We will see how zakah not only leads to the economic progress of individuals and all human beings, but to their spiritual progress as well. We will also note the difference between Sadaqaa and Zakah.

What do you think? Is ignorance really a blessing? A bliss? A mode of relaxation and no worries? Akuna matata?(from Lion King- NO WORRIES)? I have found in my experience people who are ignorant can be easily justified with some other reasoning. They do not have to know things in order to do anything, because they don't know.

Can ignorance be consciously done? Is it an escape from the reality?

The All-Glorious

Everything in the heavens and everything in Earth belongs to Him. He is the Most High, the All-Glorious . ( Surat ash-Shura, 42:4)
Allah's might and grandeur is surely beyond humanity's grasp. Yet, within the limits of their wisdom, people can still see and grasp His might. Indeed, the entire universe abounds with countless examples that indicate His greatness. A closer look at our own planet will make people feel His sublimity.
The heavens carrying clouds that weigh many tons, mountains rising thousands of meters in the air, oceans harboring millions of living beings, a lightening flash and the noise of thunder following it, and billions of living beings that have submitted to Allah-all of these and countless other details are clear signs of Allah's existence.
To have a better grasp of our Lord's grandeur, let's move beyond the limits of our world and think: We live in an unbounded space, the universe, which contains billions of galaxies with countless billions of stars. We live in one of these galaxies on a planet called Earth, which rotates about its axis at a velocity of about 1.670 kilometers an hour. Just thinking on these vast figures make us realize that our existence in the universe is as insignificant as the existence of a dust particle on Earth.
As this example also reveals, people given to sincere contemplation can grasp the majesty of their Lord, Who creates billions of galaxies and holds all of them in His hand. In one verse, Allah informs us about His beautiful names:
Allah, there is no deity but Him, the Living, the Self-Sustaining. He is not subject to drowsiness or sleep. Everything in the heavens and Earth belongs to Him. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except for what He wills. His Footstool encompasses the heavens and Earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the All-Glorious. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:255)

The Protector
He [Prophet Nuh's son] said: "I will seek refuge on a mountain that shall protect me from the water." Nuh said: " There is no protector today from Allah's punishment but He Who has mercy ." (Surah Hud, 11:43)
People, all of whom are inherently feeble, can encounter all sorts of difficulties at any time, such as an earthquake, flood, hurricane, or volcanic eruption. In addition, people are vulnerable to mental distress. In the face of these unfavorable events, they must consider the following: Regardless of their effort or strength, they can never avoid a threat unless Allah wills this. Allah, the most Compassionate, is the only Protector, as the Qur'an relates in the following verses:
Say: "Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and sea? You call upon Him humbly and secretly: 'If you rescue us from this, we will truly be among the thankful.'" Say: "Allah rescues you from it, and from every plight. Then you associate others with Him.'" ( Surat al-An'am, 6:63-64)
People remember Allah when they are left alone, when they realize that neither material wealth nor powerful people can help them, or when they fall sick. Yet after these situations pass, they forget what happened to them and become ungrateful toward Allah. Such people, who insist upon ungratefulness despite Allah's protection, will see the truth when they face infinite punishment in Hell. Their situation is related, as follows:
As for those who show disdain and grow arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment. They will not find any protector or helper for themselves besides Allah. ( Surat an-Nisa', 4:173)

The Most High

It does not befit Allah to address any human being except by inspiration or from behind a veil, or He sends a messenger who then reveals by His permission whatever He wills. He is indeed Most High , All-Wise. ( Surat ash-Shura, 42:51)
Allah introduces Himself to us: Allah, the Creator of all the worlds and the sole Sovereign of the universe, is the Most High and the Possessor of the heavens, Earth, and everything in between. There is no deity but Him. High is He, Exalted above all that they associate (with Him). He is the Sovereign, the All-Powerful, and the Lord of the Ways of Ascent. Allah is Self-Sufficient, above all need.
All of the beautiful names belong to Allah, for He is the Owner of infinite beauty and infinite sublimity. A person can know Him only to the extent that He introduces Himself, and can appreciate Him through the verses of the Qur'an. In one verse, Allah describes this name in the following terms:
Allah, there is no deity but Him, the Living, the Self-Sustaining. He is not subject to drowsiness or sleep. Everything in the heavens and Earth belongs to Him. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except for what He wills. His Footstool encompasses the heavens and Earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Magnificent. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:255)

The mess in Pakistan’s western areas is not just a battle with religious extremism. A larger part is a battle of proxies. There are credible reports that Indian and Israeli intelligence involvement in U.S.-controlled Afghanistan has deepened in the past seven years. American military and intelligence officials are impressed with the record of both countries in fighting Islamic groups in Kashmir and the Mideast. Israel invested heavily in establishing schools that study the art of Islamic indoctrination. These schools were used to learn how clerics can brainwash recruits and then exploit them politically. Israeli spymasters have used this knowledge to penetrate Islamic groups and plant agents. They have passed this technique on to the Indians to help them counter pro-Pakistan religious groups in Kashmir. In the Kargil war in 1999, Pakistanis and Kashmiris faced a direct Israeli special operations intervention on the side of the Indian military.

Both East and West belong to Allah, so wherever you turn, the Face of Allah is there. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing . ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:115)

After people begin to think, they start to learn and, over time, accumulate more and more knowledge. Some specialize in certain fields, such as physics, philosophy, or history. All of this knowledge relates to the verb "to know," as we understand it. However, this verb also has a dimension that is far beyond humanity's grasp: how Allah knows things.
Allah, being the Creator, holds the knowledge of the heavens, Earth, and every being in between, as well as of all the laws regulating the universe and anything that happens, regardless of time or place. Moreover, His knowledge is boundless, for He knows the names of all new-born babies at any moment, every leaf falling from every tree, what will happen to each star in each galaxy, whatever happens in space at any moment, what is hidden in every living thing's DNA, and an infinite number of other things.
We must always keep the following fact in mind: In addition to what has been mentioned above, Allah knows all of our thoughts and our most secret acts. We assume that we alone are aware of our feelings, thoughts, or distress. But this is a delusion, for Allah, Who holds complete control over every point of the universe, knows what is in each person's mind and everything else. Indeed, the Qur'an informs us about Allah's infinite knowledge:
You will not attain true goodness until you give of what you love. Whatever you give away, Allah knows it. (Surah 'Al Imran, 3:92)
Do you not see that everyone in the heavens and Earth glorifies Allah, as do the birds with their outspread wings? Each one knows its prayer and glorification. Allah knows what they do. ( Surat an-Nur, 24:41)
And the sun runs to its resting place. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing. (Surah Ya Sin, 36:38)
See how they wrap themselves round, trying to conceal their feelings from Him! No, indeed! When they wrap their garments round themselves, He knows what they keep secret and what they make public. He knows what their hearts contain. (Surah Hud, 11:5)
But they will never ever long for it, because of what they have done. Allah knows the wrongdoers. ( Surat al-Baqara, 2:95)
You did not kill them; it was Allah Who killed them. You did not throw when you threw; it was Allah Who threw: so He might test the believers with this excellent trial from Him. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. ( Surat al-Anfal, 8:17)

The Most Just Judge
Is Allah not the Most Just Judge ? ( Surat at-Tin, 95:8)
Allah passes judgment on each matter and concludes them. All events evolve and develop upon His command and wish. Each of His judgments contains many hidden divine purposes. However, most people do not really understand His commands, for, given their limited intelligence, their ability to do so is also limited. Furthermore, Allah is infinitely wise, exalted above time and space, and the One Who created and bound humanity to these concepts. A person can never know what will happen the next day or even in an hour. When Allah gives a command, however, He has total knowledge of all of its consequences, regardless of time or place. Consequently, Allah creates everything in compliance with His plan and for a divine purpose.
But unbelievers can never understand Allah's purposes, for they base their worldview on certain causes and then think that everything evolves randomly and coincidentally. Therefore, they fail to understand that Allah controls everything. Believers, however, strive to grasp the divine purposes in Allah's judgments and comprehend that He gives the best judgments. In the Qur'an, Allah commands the following:
Follow what has been revealed to you, and be steadfast until Allah's judgment comes. He is the Best of Judges. (Surah Yunus, 10:109)
Nuh called out to his Lord and said: "My Lord, my son is one of my family. Your promise is surely the truth, and You are the Most Just Judge." (Surah Hud, 11:45)

But the woman, who asked that her name be withheld to protect her identity and that of her children, was abused for years by her husband, a lawyer.
‘He strangled me, he spat on me, he slapped me,’ the woman, a 37-year-old mother of two who grew up in a wealthy London-based Indian family, told Reuters in an interview.
She is among millions of Indian women, from all classes, who are abused by their husbands. A recent government survey said one in three Indian women were victims of domestic violence.
Her education and status among India's elite gave little protection against her well-heeled and well-connected spouse.
After years of abuse, she took her husband to court under a landmark domestic violence act meant to protect battered wives and give stiff penalties to abusers, but so far to no avail.
‘This law, which is enacted by the parliament in 2006, has not been taken seriously,’ her lawyer, K.K. Manan, told Reuters. ‘On one pretext or another, the case is being adjourned’.

The Last; The One Who Exists After Everything Else Perishes
He is the First and the Last , the Outward and the Inward. He has knowledge of all things. ( Surat al-Hadid, 57:3)
Allah created the universe from nothing and, ultimately, will return it to its initial state and destroy it. Nothing is immortal, for all living beings come into existence for a predetermined period of time and then die—everything, that is, except Allah, Who is the First and the Last and therefore without beginning or end.
Allah, the Creator of life and time, is not affected by any of matter's characteristics. Given that He is infinite, He will exist for all eternity, existed in the infinite past, and is unaffected by time and space. This fact is stressed in the Qur'an, as follows:
Everyone on it will pass away; but the Face of your Lord will remain, Master of Majesty and Generosity. ( Surat ar-Rahman, 55:26-27)

AL-‘AFUW - The Pardoner

Whether you reveal a good act or keep it hidden, or pardon an evil act, Allah is Ever-Pardoning, All-Powerful. ( Surat an-Nisa', 4:149)
People are fallible beings who may at any time think erroneously, make a wrong decision, or display a flawed attitude. But Allah, Who created humanity and is fully aware of these mistakes, forgives them. If He were not so forgiving, no soul would ever attain Paradise . Indeed, Allah calls attention to this fact, as follows:
If Allah were to punish people for their wrong actions, not a single creature would be left upon Earth, but He defers them until a predetermined time. When their specified time arrives, they cannot delay it for a single hour or bring it forward. ( Surat an-Nahl, 16:61)
Yet we need to remember that Allah only forgives His sincere servants who turn to Him in repentance. Thus, those desiring His forgiveness must be sincere and resolute in their repentance. Allah makes it clear that He will not forgive those who repent but then return to their former ways without feeling any true regret. In one verse, Allah states the following:
Allah only accepts the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and then quickly repent after doing it. Allah turns toward such people. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. ( Surat an-Nisa', 4:17)

AL-‘ADL - The Just, The Equitable

O You who believe! Show integrity for the sake of Allah, bearing witness with justice. Do not let hatred for a people incite you into not being just. Be just. That is closer to piety. Have fear [and awareness] of Allah. Allah is aware of what you do. ( Surat al-Ma'ida, 5:8)
Allah is the most just judge. As His order encompasses the universe, He will show His justice to His servants both in this world and beyond. All the acts of Allah, Who is All-Seeing, All-Knowing, and All-Aware, are for a divine purpose and are just.
Allah will judge all of each person's deeds according to His justice. Allah informs us that those who engage in violence will be punished and that even a single good word will be rewarded. He will manifest His infinite justice in the Hereafter.
The difficulties that unbelievers make for Prophets and believers, as well as their slanderous accusations and sins, will not remain unanswered. All of these difficulties, which raise believers' ranks in Paradise , lead unbelievers to the lowest level of the Fire. On the Day of Judgment, Allah will set up the Just Balance, and no soul will be wronged in any way. Allah will call them to account by ending the time that He has granted them. Given that Allah, the All-Knowing, keeps His promise, all people will see the consequences of their wrong actions in the Hereafter. Thus, unbelievers will be punished severely, while those who remained true to Allah will be rewarded most bountifully. In one verse, Allah states the following:
Those who pledge their allegiance to you [the Prophet] pledge allegiance to Allah. Allah's hand is over their hands. He who breaks his pledge only breaks it against himself. But as for him who fulfils the contract he has made with Allah, We will pay him an immense reward. ( Surat al-Fath, 48:10)
There is an important point to consider here: While pondering over His justice, do not compare it with the human concept of justice, for a faithless person, while passing judgment, may well comply with his whims and desires, remain under the influence of his feelings, or forget what has been done. Most importantly, one never knows what is in the other party's mind. But Allah, Who never errs or forgets, has assigned angels for every person in order to observe and record each of their acts and thoughts. In brief, Allah holds each person's soul in His hand. The Qur'an also reveals that our Lord, Who gives the best judgment, is infinitely just:
On the Day We summon every people with their records, those who are given their Book in their right hand will read their Book and will not be wronged by even the smallest speck. ( Surat al-Isra', 17:71)
In the Hereafter, Allah will pay back all of the wrongdoing and plots hatched against believers. In this life, He may grant the unbelievers many blessings (e.g., wealth and possessions), yet these will only lead them to more evil. In the Qur'an, Allah states that believers must not be attracted to such blessings, for when compared with what awaits them in the Hereafter, the benefits of this short life are insignificant, especially when the infinite punishment of Hell awaits unbelievers.
In the Hereafter, each person's real abode, every soul will find itself confronted with all of its good deeds. Allah will manifest His justice in Hell and Paradise for all eternity. Ultimately, Allah will separate those who believe in Him from those who do not.
Say: “Our Lord will bring us all together and then will judge between us with the truth. He is the Just Decider, the All-Knowing.” (Surah Saba , 34:26)
Allah commands believers to be just as follows:
Allah does not forbid you from being good to those who have not fought you in the religion or driven you from your homes, or from being just toward them. Allah loves those who are just. ( Surat al-Mumtahana, 60:8)
Allah commands you to return to their owners the things you hold on trust and, when you judge between people, to judge with justice. How excellent is what Allah exhorts you to do! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. ( Surat an-Nisa', 4:58)
They are people who listen to lies and consume ill-gotten gains. If they come to you, you can either judge between them or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they cannot harm you in any way. But if you do judge, judge between them justly. Allah loves the just. ( Surat al-Ma'ida, 5:42)

US Embassy Summons Nawaz Sharif

I am disappointed in Mr. Nawaz Sharif. The truth is, the Sharif brothers went to the U.S. Embassy alone and didn't take along any party member. So this wasn't a party visit. This was a personal-cum-family visit to see if the Americans would agree to ditch Zardari and PPP and help Nawaz Sharif 'return' to his rightful seat, the premiership. It was hunger for power that took the Sharif brothers to the U.S. embassy. If Mr. Sharif was a real Pakistani nationalist, he would have asked Mr. Holbrooke to come to Lahore, or at least to the Punjab House in the federal capital which is the official venue for a foreign government official to meet the chief minister of a Pakistani province.

There are two piracies in Somalia, the well publicized attacks on shipping by pirates from Somalia, and the much more expensive, damaging, and long lived piracy in Somali waters, the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing fleets there from Europe, Arabia and the Far East, and the dumping of toxic waste in Somali waters. Both of these are violations of international law, but because Somalia has had no real government for close to two decades, no one has listened when Somalis ask for help with these two piracies.

Yes, Saudi Arabia has given $400 billion to the recovery program. Now, I was wondering who will benefit from these contributions and who needs the recovery the most? The $1 trillion will go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), perhaps the biggest beneficiary of the G-20 talks. Thus far the main contributors to the $1 trillion pledged include $100 billion from Japan; $100 billion from the EU; and $40 billion from China.

Now, the U.S. gives Israel almost $3 Billion a year. Obviously they are a poor country from many decades and I assume the U.S. knows. Now, is the U.S. going to give the money they are borrowing from other countries to Israel first? Or are they going to help the U.S. economy?

"A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way? Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make...Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place? Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him. The great critic Leo Velski Julian who told the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids. While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

A ‘law’ is different from an ‘order’: ‘Law’ is based upon its consistency (if you do this, that will ALWAYS happen). ‘Order’ is a decision. A master issues a variety of orders to his servants. One order may differ in kind from the previous one. Therefore, ‘orders’ are decisions which are subject to change. But when an order (decision) becomes consistent (with no possibility of change), it becomes law (unchangeable decision). Allah’s decisions about the universe (standards and measures) are unchangeable. The permanence of laws of Nature provides the foundation for the sciences. This ever-reliable foundation of permanent laws enables (‘tawakkal’ in the Quranic terminology) the earthlings to take successful trips to the Moon. In fact, the entire structure of our wonderful universe stands on the permanence, consistency and reliability of the laws of Nature. "

The situation in the world today is disturbing and disappointing. Lawlessness and deterioration is quickly taking place. Why? In addition to thousands of reasons, one of the reasons to be mentioned here is ignorance. We are forgetting the purpose of our life. It is unfortunate that Western Societies today are busy libeling, maligning, ostracizing, banishing, evicting, disconnecting, and eradicating other nations and Muslim countries in South Asia and Middle East and Pakistan and not paying attention on what is going on within the society. If we would just stop for a moment and realize that all human beings are human beings, they are created equally, they have blood running in their veins, and all are mortal then their would be a bit less chaos in our lives today. We have to stop thinking that America has to rule the world by hook or by crook. If Mother Nature has created this world then America does not have any obligation to be the father Nature of the world. This path is not safe for America. We don’t want to be the fish eating fish.
The church shooting yesterday in MARYVILLE, Ill is a serious threat from Christian fundamentalists. No one knows what is going on in these churches. The police are still investigating. It is sad to see these recurring dangerous attacks. Is this a returning trend long hidden? Is Christian fundamentalism returning within the Christians? Jim Suhr writer for Associated Press reported the following reports in addition to the yesterday’s deadly shooting. “MARYVILLE, Ill. – A pastor shot and killed during his Sunday sermon deflected the first of the gunman's four rounds with a Bible, sending a confetti-like spray of paper into the air in a horrifying scene that congregants initially thought was a skit, police said.”
“Last month, a man shot and killed himself in front of a cross inside televangelist Robert H. Schuller's Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. In November, a gunman killed his estranged wife in a New Jersey church vestibule as Sunday services let out.
In July, two people were killed and six wounded in a shooting rampage at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tenn. An out-of-work truck driver who police say targeted the church for its liberal leanings pleaded guilty to the shootings and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.”

Recently, we all have been hailing the great leap in the history of Saudi Arabia to appoint a woman minister, Nora bint Abdullah al-Fayez. Yes, it is time to congratulate her and Saudi Arabia but does not it bring to the mind that the right of equality and propagation of women given 1400 years ago is being realized today? Has the culture been so dominant and powerful over the wisdom of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)? Is this a good example today to show to the narrow minds and enemies of Islam that as Muslims we have had been in a state of amnesia for 1400 years?
The Quranic Verse 33:35 very powerfully describes 1400 years ago:

“O Rasool! The education and upbringing of your household is all the more important, because they have to serve as models for other women. Remember that society consists of both men and women, who have to go through life hand in hand. If one of them lags behind, it is bound to hamper the progress of the other. It should be well understood that there is no difference in the potentialities of men and women; except certain biological differences which have been retained for the posterity of the human race.) Therefore, in an Islamic Society, both men and women should have the following qualities:

They should totally submit to the Divine Laws;
This obedience should not be mechanical, but must arise from the very depth of their hearts. They should thus exhibit complete conviction in them;
They should utilize their developed potentialities according to the Divine Laws;
They are true to the covenant (9:111) which they have made with Allah;
They remain steadfast when facing adversities, troubles or difficulties;
They are always prompt in rendering service to others (like the fruit-laden branch of an easily accessible tree);
They are ever ready to sacrifice all their assets for the sake of the Divine Order;
They abstain themselves from all that the Divine Laws prohibit them to do and they bear in mind the restrictions imposed by these Laws;
They guard their chastity fully;
In short, throughout their lives, at each and every step, they act upon the Divine Laws.
These are the people to whom Allah’s Law of Mukafat shall provide full protection against all types of doom. They will get great reward for all their efforts and deeds. (In this regard there is no difference between men and women ~ 3:194; 4:124.)”

FEAR, WHY FEAR?

I don't mean to scare you or make you feel depressed. However, we have to address the situation in our environments and the factor of 'fear' attached to it. Fear in the news, fear in our minds, fear in our travels, basically fear of everything in our lives. Where does it take us from here? What is it doing to our minds, bodies, families, children, environment? Why have we become 'FEAR-UMAN?'

It saddens me to realize that with all the education, learning, progress in medicine, food, technology, psychology, philosophy, interpretations, explanations, and you name it, we are at a point in our lives where we are most afraid, unsatisfied, discontent, unhappy, unhealthy, and you name it. So, what is the use of living like this? What do you think is a realistic way to live? Should we fear and forget to live and die fearfully?

It is Revelation alone which gives abiding universal values. The revealed values are preserved in the Holy Quran, the code of life for mankind in all climes and ages. Quranic values are Permanent Values of life and provide a universal standard of character or, to use Quranic terminology, Taqwa."

How much do you think in a day? Now the question arises, think about what? Well, let us keep our focus and talk about what we think and/or do in a day that is beneficial to others? Now, the main point is to be thinking. Are we knowingly thinking? Are we conscious of our thinking and doing? While doing all this thinking, a message comes and my mind asks consciously, who and what are Christian and Jewish terrorists? What are Islamic terrorists? Who are Muslim terrorist? Is there a difference in Muslim and Islamic? Do all these terrorist of various faiths go to their respective worshipping places like churches, synagogues, and mosques to get the training of terrorizing people? Who are Hindu terrorists? Do they all really exist? What is the purpose of all these titles given to various groups of people living on this earth who have different ways of practicing their faiths? Is there a war of ‘my religion is better than yours’ going on? After all the pain and struggle this world has gone through of centuries of fighting, conquering, defeats, religions, prophets and here we are after all this time going to be fighting about who is better than who? Is this a stone age or the supposedly most advance age? What is so beneficial with terrorism? Even the word “terrorism” must be crying and would want to be deleted from the dictionary and history of words. What do you think?

Hello everyone,
It has been a while since I have posted anything thought provoking and useful for the sharp brains out there. I would have liked to receive some comments on my various posts but then I guess everyone is too busy digesting and processing the world affairs.

There is so much going on in the world today whether it is the current affairs, the history told today in the affluent magazines of the West, or the programs on the cable channels.
From the new threat of “weapons of mass destruction” in the skies of New York in the United States of America that brought the U.S. Air plane down, to innocent self defense of Israel, to India’s mindless tactics against its neighbors, to brother hood of I & I (Israel & India) joining hands in the ‘dream’ to rule the world and the United States of America. The loving and passionate relationship of never ending support shown for each other (I & I) in the print and mass media for each other’s attacks on the neighboring countries and anyone who is not the chosen one. From the constant propaganda of Indian news, Israel, and the West against Islam ( a way of life, not a religion), to never mentioning of the great name of Quad e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of the PAKISTAN (The Land of Pure), in the enormous struggle and fight against the British Rule in India for the Independence in 1947. The bias, the stereotype, and the unfair reporting has become the motto of I & I, and the Western media. They really need to pay attention on their weakening, unauthentic, and unrespectable reporting habits.

Life Has A Purpose?

There is a lot to talk and write about different topics and issues in our world today, but where to begin? There is so much in life that can positively contribute to the society and the world but by the time we usually realize what the purpose of life is, the time seems to be a bit less for accomplishing what we are planning and would like to achieve. Does this happen with everyone? Some wise person told me that to find the purpose of your life is a very important thing. And once you have a purpose and know why you are here in this universe, then things can be a little easier and less time would be wasted. What do you think? I think it makes sense. Now, you can focus and reach the target with wasting lesser time. So, in order to be focused and know the purpose in life, you have to make sure that you are healthy physically and psychologically. So, to be healthy one has to be aware first that health is important. To be aware, you have to be constantly conscious. And to be aware and conscious does help us to focus and hopefully we realize that life has a purpose sooner than later.

Who are the other terrorists of Mumbai incident? Only one person was caught and all others killed? What a ‘co-incident.’ 10 terrorists controlled the whole city? What would Pakistan gain from these attacks if for a moment we assume this obscure assumption? When are the elections being held in India? Are there any issues with the numerous separatist’s movements of India? Is there anything that should be investigated related to the Hindu right-wing party BJP (Bharatia Janata Party of India)? Yes, no, maybe?

Five days of coverage was given by CNN on Mumbai (Bombay) tragedy. However, when the horribly tragic Islamabad Marriot bombing in the capital of Pakistan took place, the news flashed for a few minutes and was gone on the CNN and other cable channels. Is this fair and objective reporting by CNN and other media outlets in the U.S. or the lives of people in India vs. Pakistan have some different value in some people’s eyes?

Anytime there is a bomb explosion or someone gets killed in India, without any investigation or proof, the blame is pointed towards Pakistan. Also, then there are brilliant people like Thomas L. Friedman who apparently cares for the people in general but have been blind and had amnesia in some cases. When the bombings in Marriot Islamabad took place, when Samjhauta Express in India ended up as a morgue express in which 68 people mostly Muslims were ruthlessly killed by the hands of Hindu terrorists. Why have not Mr. Thomas Friedman written, called, and cried for the atrocities that took place against Native Americans? Where are the Native Americans today? What conditions are they living in today? Why hasn’t the whole American society observed some Black Days (not A day) and observe a shameful era of Native American annihilation? Why isn’t Friedman calling for Indians in ‘Incredible India’ to rise and come for their sake against the atrocities taking place everyday against Dalits of India?

Pedophile party announces policies From correspondents in Amsterdam

DUTCH pedophiles were launching a political party to push for a cut in the legal age for sexual relations from 16 to 12 and the legalization of child pornography and sex with animals.
The Charity, Freedom and Diversity (NVD) party said on its website it would be registered officially on Wednesday, proclaiming: "We are going to shake The Hague awake!"
The party said it wanted to cut the legal age for sexual relations to 12 and eventually scrap the limit altogether.
The broadcast of pornography should be allowed on daytime television, with only violent pornography limited to the late evening, according to the party.
Toddlers should be given sex education and youths aged 16 and up should be allowed to appear in pornographic films and prostitute themselves.

The Characteristics of the Dutch Society

What Characterizes Holland’s social life is the absence of values where people disdain whatever is associated with morals. For instance, addiction to alcohol and drugs dominates people’s behavior. The cities witness licentiousness and wantonness whereas the villages still try to keep some conservative customs and traditions especially in family matters, which is somehow protected from being ruined. Human beings are really complicated and amazing creations of the Creator (if you believe in a Creator). Humans can rise to the levels of Prophecy and then on the other hand fall to the shallow depths of barbarism. You get glimpses of that in the USA. It happens to be that America has the diversity and attributes of a democratic responsible nation that claims that there is no land in the world like America, a land of opportunity, a melting pot of wealth and riches, a land of fairness and justice for all, a proclaimer of equal opportunity, at the same time a place where people have to write letters and give explanations to prove that they belong to Christian or Jewish faiths and God forbid, not to any other faith. And to get an approval to legitimize the candidacy of a ‘colored’ person is also a struggle, considering that only a few decades ago lynching of a black person was a reality and an accepted one, for that matter. The land of U.S.A even has people who are untiringly working to depict that a candidate of Muslim roots can be a danger to the nation of immigrants. A land whose history, albeit unknown to countless human beings, is full of shameful acts of atrocities against humanity. A nation who is so far the first one to use nuclear arsenals against other human beings and at the same time claiming to be the responsible holder of nuclear weapons.It never stops denouncing other nations, especially Muslim nations projecting them as a threat to world peace if they have or are trying to attain nuclear technology. Where do we stand today as an American nation, I ask myself. Is it important to be American, Latino, British, etc or is it crucial to be a gentle, loving, human being who works for the betterment of man kind and mother earth? Is it important to be a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, etc or a human being who is beyond the limitations of any cast, color, or creed , is really fair and knows what justice for all is? If we haven’t asked ourselves this, then it is time to ask now.

A friend's request to BAN INDIAN MEDIA in PAKISTAN

“An appeal and a request to people of PAKISTAN… Please stop watching INDIAN MOVIES. WHY? You tell me why not? They are promoting their industry and injecting useless hobby in PAKISTAN. (Which maybe if you research, you might find that Indians even do not appreciate what their media is portraying and showing about the Indians themselves). And what about those who think that they are bringing competition in Pakistani cinema? What competition? Of wearing skimpy clothes, objectifying women, depicting unrealistic culture, and slaughtering the Urdu language by mixing Hindi. And most of the movies and their music are pathetically copied from the Western, Arabic, and Pakistani industry. Very little effort is invested by Indian producers and directors for the Indian movies. It is in their religion to sing and dance, why should we bring this unproductive activity to our people, in addition to all the reprehensible and shocking customs that we have already inherited from them? Let the Indians do whatever they want to do but don’t be fooled by their sweet “Gandhi tactics.” Why don't we learn something productive from the world. How to be smart in business and get conscious of our actions. Remind yourself of the reason why Pakistan came into being. Remember the sacrifice of millions of Muslims to bring this country on the world map. Think of Quad-e-Azam and Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal's purpose of all the hardship they went through to create something never done before. I don't believe that Honorable Quad e Azam gets a fair share of appreciation from his own nation and the world as compared to Gandhi. Quad e Azam's tremendous and remarkable achievement is not brought into attention intentionally in any media in contrast to Gandhi's name. A very thoughtful process is behind it. Who is conscious and who is not. Hindustan has never accepted Pakistan and they never will. So, stop living in a fantasy world before it is too late. To straighten your mind and heart, you just need to read the history, the Indian newspapers and talk to Indian Muslims. You might wake up! Better to watch their news and read what they write about the minorities in India and about Pakistan. Look at GEO and ARY, (sometimes it feels as if these channels have been bought by Mr. Manmohan Singh) they are also promoting Indian movies, dramas, and Indian songs. Seems like GEO and ARY does not have any news of the Pakistani movie industry or media, otherwise they are very patriotic you know!" What anyone does in the privacy of their homes is their own business but on the national level this promotion of Indian movies should be stopped.

The greatest of the great, a philosopher, a phenomenal thinker and a visionary. A personality of mesmerizing attributes who will be remembered for ages to come.
Allama Muhammad Iqbal ( November 9, 1877 – April 21, 1938) was a great poet, philosopher and politician born in Sialkot in Pakistan whose poetry in Urdu, Arabic and Persian is considered to be among the greatest of the modern era, and whose vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India was to inspire the creation of Pakistan. He is commonly referred to as Allama Iqbal, Allama meaning "Scholar". Dr. Allama Iqbal, who is enormously admired and acknowledged not only in the South Asia but also the world-over – as a great spiritualist, thinker and philosopher of the 20th century epoch. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who is generally known as a poet and philosopher, was also a noted jurist, a politician, a social reformer as well as a great Islamic scholar and people even bestowed on him the title of "Shaer-e-Mashriq (Poet of the East)". This is extremely impressive news of the day to be learned from Saudi Arabia in the current times of growing health issues from smoking. An excellent example set by MBC. Hope more countries can follow this example and keep the lust for money away for the benefit of human beings.

Future of women in the U.S. politics

Now that Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin are back where they were before the 2008 November elections, what is the future of women in politics in the U.S.A.? Is it the gender issue or the capability that is missing in these women or something else? Of course, we have our reasons to argue the capability issue of both the candidates. However, is America not ready for a female presidential and/or vice presidential candidate to be elected to live in the White House? Comparing the U.S. with the Pakistan in choosing the leader, it is quite amazing to see that a country like Pakistan whose politics is totally different than the U.S. politics and who unfortunately has been facing constant political turmoil, chose a female prime minister twice. Whereas the worlds biggest leader (so far) with the label of democracy and telling the world what to do, how to do, and what not to do could not ever have the capacity to bring a female president or prime minister in Washington in its entire history? However, America should be appreciated for now for its big heart to elect President Barack Obama for its journey to a positive intersection. A nation that everyone must know came into the shape what it is today from a very dark past that we do not plan to discuss in this short note. Now why is that so? Are the females of the U.S. no match to late Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan? Is money the issue? Why are not the women in the U.S. paid equal salaries for the same jobs as men are paid? If hypothetically we assume that a woman president was elected, would she be paid less than a male president. Is this democratic? Is this equality and justice for all? Maybe when the salaries of women and men are equal for the same jobs in America, then a woman president or vice president will be chosen? How do I explain this to my daughter, asked a friend?

It is time to give credit to the people of Amerca that Barack Obama was elected with a great victory. Is anyone concerned about the glitches and mechanical registration problems, and other such issues? Are the long lines the reason of a big turn out or any other reason? Should the "world leader" have a third class voting issues? When the U.S.A. goes around the world dictating, monitoring and forcing other countries to fix their election procedures and to be fair in their elections, what is the example being set by ELECTION 2008 in the U.S.A. ?
